Snap blades are utility knife blades designed with scored sections along their length, allowing the user to “snap off” a dull segment and reveal a fresh, sharp edge. They’re commonly used in retractable utility knives for cutting paper, cardboard, plastics, and other light to medium-duty materials. Because the blade can be refreshed multiple times without replacement, snap blades are cost-effective, versatile, and popular for crafting, construction, and everyday utility work.
At first glance, it would seem that they are all the same, but that isn’t true at all.
There are differences in handle quality and comfort as well as blade quality. While I love Harbor Freight for most of my tool needs, their snap blade handles are pretty cheap plastic. They are extremely in expensive and will do in a pinch, but they tend to come apart during use and have hard edges instead of comfortable curves and are pretty thin. This makes them hard to use for an extended period at the best of times. For comfort and ease of use, we recommend a blade with a larger handle and some curves. The one pictured is available at Lowes and is quite comfortable to use.
We don’t recommend utility knives – the ones that have a razor blade in the handle – because they lack the control necessary for detailed work, especially on foam. Additionally, the blades are short. A snap blade has the advantage of having a long blade that can be extended and sharpened on a whet stone. Keeping a sharp blade is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for working with foam as a dull blade will start to tear instead of cutting.
Snap blades come in 3 sizes, 9mm, 18mm and 25mm. We use both in the shop. They also come in smooth and serrated edges. I don’t recommen the serrated edge for foam work, because it leaves a slightly scalloped edge on beveled surfaces.
